These are Luke Closs's notes from reading Wikinomics

Notes / Mind map of the book Wikinomics

Wikinomics - Don Tapscott, Anthony D. Williams, 2005

Wikinomics is a metaphor for a new era of mass collaboration and participation.

Old style: "Plan and Push" becomes "Engage and co-create"

Principles of Wikinomics

  • Being Open
  • Peering
  • Sharing
  • Acting Globally

Peer Production

Peer production is a common theme in Wikinomics.

  • Masses collaborate openly
    • Whereas Communism stifled individualism, mass collaboration achieves shared outcomes through voluntary associations

Benefits of Peer Production

  • Harness external talent (great people outside your company)
  • Keep up with your users
  • Boost demand for complementary offerings
  • Reduce costs
  • Shift the locus of competition
  • Taking friction out of collaboration
  • Develop social capital

The Perfect Storm

Several factors contribute to the new era of Wikinomics:

  • The new web (Web 2.0)

Web 1.0 is a digital newspaper, Web 2.0 is a shared canvas

    • Blogging
    • Tagging
    • Network is your filter
    • Emergence and Serendipitous Innovation
  • Demographic Watershed
    • 1977-1996 is the Net generation
    • New shared spaces (myspace, facebook)
    • Net generation are Prosumers (more on that below)
    • Net gen is more than comfortable with internet tools
  • Global Economics
    • Coarse's law: (rougly) Do things in-house until they become cheaper to outsource
    • Transaction costs have dropped with the internet
    • Global playing field - India/China

Peer Pioneers

  • Linux, adopted by IBM (also Apache)
  • Wikipedia

Ideagoras

Marketplaces for ideas

  • Solutions looking for questions
  • Questions looking for solutions

Companies need to figure out how to leverage the idea marketplaces.

Prosumers

  • Customers as co-innovators
  • Control vs Customer Hacking (where to balance - Sony vs Lego)
  • Harnessing Prosumer Communities
    • Must do more than simple customizations
    • Losing Control to your users
    • Customer toolkits & Context orchastration
      • Design for prosumption
    • Become a peer
    • Share the fruits

Open Science

Conduct the basic science openly, capitalize later...

"Proprietary advantage is more effectively obtained in the later stages of a project"

  • Drug companies (say) are more effective at trials, marketing, ...
  • Drug companies work together to establish the basic science

Platforms for Participation

It's all about the API, baby.

APIs allow faster innovation, people can just start hacking with the API.

Harnessing the Global Plant Floor

Boeing building their next plane - peering with other companies to produce it.

  • Focus on the critical value drivers
  • Add value through orchastration
  • Rapid, iterative design process
  • Modular architectures
  • Transparent ecosystem
  • Share costs and risks

The Wiki Workplace

  • New work environments
  • New economics of work
  • New sources of identity and security
    • Identity is not attached to employer anymore

Wikinomics Design Principles

  • Take cues from lead users
  • Build critical mass
  • Supply infrastructure for collaboration
  • Take time for structures and governance to get them right
  • Make sure all participants can harnes value
